The Challenge

Five disciplines, mapped to the named standards — not to assumption.

Five healthcare disciplines, surgical technology, sterile processing, medical coding and billing, dental assisting, and phlebotomy — each needing a curriculum-level instructional design document that strictly mirrors national certification standards. Built against the named industry documents rather than assumption, with week-by-week alignment to certification objectives, task analyses, and didactic and clinical goals.

All five had to run in parallel under firm certification deadlines, with rigorous format consistency across streams — and with subject-matter expert input that turned out to be inconsistent, acutely so in one discipline.

What we built

One template, raised to a higher bar — and the catch that mattered.

A parallel IDD pipeline with a single standardized template. Mid-stream, the bar was deliberately raised: early documents were judged too generic and tabular, so the format was rebuilt around learning objectives, seat time, weekly assessments, and full timing maps. That upgraded template became the standard every subsequent curriculum was held to.

The compliance catch
The initially assumed certification standard for the surgical technology program required a two-year college pathway, structurally incompatible with the online entry-level certificate the client was building. We flagged it, re-mapped the entire curriculum to the correct certifying body, and stripped every reference to the wrong standard within a week — before a single learner was affected.

Where SME input went quiet, the team researched and bridged the subject matter itself to keep all five streams moving. Each finished IDD shipped with asset-reuse reports and documentation clean enough for the client’s team to move straight into production.

All five curricula signed off to the raised standard, a real certification exposure averted, and a reusable gold-standard IDD template the client keeps. The downstream production build — storyboarding alone modeled at roughly 1,450 hours, plus simulations, video, and 3D animation — was scoped in full and positioned as a properly resourced phase two rather than compressed into a timeline that couldn’t hold it. Knowing the size of that work, precisely, was part of the deliverable.

The certification-basis error was inherited, not created, but correcting it meant reverting and re-aligning a signed-off curriculum mid-stream. The deliverable spec itself was renegotiated in-flight. The definition of “instructionally substantive” wasn’t locked at signing, and settling it cost real time. And SME availability was the constant undercurrent: in the weakest stream, the team effectively carried the subject-matter load itself to protect five parallel deadlines at once.
