The Challenge

Fifteen legacy automotive-electrical units were supposed to become modern, interactive digital courses. What actually existed: fifteen unusable storyboards with no design templates, missing subject-matter input, and a client whose confidence had collapsed, openly questioning whether the vendor side had instructional designers at all. The project was inherited in a near-failed state, and the delivery date was then pulled forward a month.

The content allowed no shortcuts. Ohm's and Watt's law, circuit behavior, digital multimeter procedure, relays, schematics, diagnostics - material demanding mechanical precision as much as pedagogical intent, for learners who will put their hands on real vehicles.

What We Built

A 2.5-month rescue sprint rebuilt the production line. All fifteen storyboards were redesigned against new templates, and a five-stage diagnostic framework (concept, conduct, concern, cause, correct) gave every unit a repeatable structure. The framework did double duty as a translation layer, converting mechanical-engineering concepts into production-ready specifications the build team could execute without guesswork.

Where expert input was missing, the team built the domain knowledge itself through primary research, then held a hard line on validation: the three highest-risk units were frozen until SME sign-off rather than built in parallel on hope. When review feedback showed a unit had merged two repairs that field technicians handle as separate, linear diagnostic paths, the instructional flow was rebuilt to match how the work is actually done, rather than the bare facts.

Delivery meant the platform, not a file transfer. Full ingestion into Anthology Blackboard: table-of-contents mapping, link-integrity testing, and gradebook configuration, plus guided simulations for multimeter measurement and relay testing and a virtual-lab experience.

Production teams need to know exactly where the wire goes.

The Outcome

All fifteen redesigned units delivered and running inside the LMS with working navigation, links, and gradebook, with overall course duration compressed by more than half while interactivity went up. The highest-risk unit, once frozen for missing inputs, shipped as one of the most reliable in production. The relationship reversed completely: a client that had questioned the team's basic competence ended the engagement relying on it for exam-grade technical and platform decisions.

What made it hard

The rescue carried a research tax. With expert input patchy or absent, the team did the subject-matter work itself (roughly double the effort a normal build would take) while translating dense technical storyboards into specifications production could execute. Late-cycle turns kept coming: a diagnostic-path rewrite requested after two completed reviews, and manufacturer workshop-manual imagery that forced redraw-versus-remove decisions on copyright grounds. Precision content under a compressed deadline leaves no room for ambiguity anywhere in the chain.
